Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Debarshi leads the grants portfolio of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation leading up to sustainable impact on Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, Family Planning and Health System Strengthening outcomes in Bihar. He is the Lead for State Health Systems and joined the foundation in 2012. Other areas of work that Debarshi supports in Bihar include digitizing health payments, community mobilization, shaping demand and practices of beneficiaries and private sector engagement. In his role with the Gates Foundation, Debarshi works closely with public policy makers and implementers and research agencies in building and supporting implementation strategies at scale.
Debarshi had more than a decade of corporate experience before moving to the non-profit space in 2010. He has worked at Johnson & Johnson in Marketing and Sales functions and most recently before joining the foundation, he was the Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Treasurer of ACCESS Health International. In his role at ACCESS Health, Debarshi helped build the organization from a start-up to global offices in 4 locations beyond India.
He has an MSc Finance majoring in Economic Policy from the University of London and an MBA from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. He is a mining engineer by undergraduate education. Through his professional career, and driven by his keen interest in learning, Debarshi has picked up an eclectic mix of skills including Quality Improvement Advisor (from Institute of Healthcare Improvement, IHI), Advanced Vaccinology (from Foundation Merieux, France) and Flagship Course on Universal Health Coverage (World Bank and Harvard University).
